12 Robustos of Xmas, Day 12: Cohiba Robusto
Thursday, January 7th, 2010The 12 Robustos of Xmas, Day 12:
Cohiba Robusto
Although one of the newest brands in Cuba, Cohiba is considered the cream of the crop, the “King of Cubans” in the cigar world. Their vitolas are the most desired amongst the cigar afficionados, and are generally the most expensive brand on the market. Established in 1966, Cohiba cigars were produced in limited numbers and were presented as diplomatic gifts. In 1982, Cohiba cigars became available in the market. The Robustos were launched in 1989, as part of the Linea Clasica. Their complexity and strength, as well as Cohiba’s unparalleled quality make it a true masterpiece, the best robusto in the world for many.

The Cohiba characteristics appear from the first draw. Medium to full body at the start, earthy and creamy flavours and a peppery finish. Into the second third the cigar gets more complex. Wood, caramel, honey and cedar are some of the flavours I could identify, with plenty of earth and wood, all perfectly balanced in a great harmony. In the last third the flavours get stronger and the body fuller. Notes of cocoa and leather are adding to its huge complexity… The Cohiba Robusto is simply delicious!
Draw & Burn 23/25
My eagerness to get a picture taken while flaming the Cohiba, resulted in getting the cigar burning sideways. After an inch and a half, the burn evens out and stays even until the end. The ash is firm , dark grey in colour, and reaches more than two inches in length, before it falls off, revealing a large, pyramid shaped coal. The draw is perfect all the way through, delivering thick smoke, with the dinstinctive Cohiba creamy texture.
TOTAL 94/100

merry Christmas to you and all cigar lovers,
I’ve read all your blogs about Christmas smokes and i am jealous, i am a daily smoker but can never identify all the flavors that you describe not if none.
is that means i have a dead palate? is there a way to train our palates?
i thank you, doing a great job
Hello Jack and happy new year to you too.
I wouldn’t think you have a dead palate, you just need to train it. When you sit down to have a cigar, try to single out anything you feel in your palate and try to associate it with something familiar you have tasted before. It is not easy on the beginning, but once you get used to it it will become easier.
There is a great article here about cigar tasting and techniques to help you. The flavour wheel at the bottom of the page is a great reference and has helped me a lot!
