Ashton VSG Enchantment - Maduro
Thursday, January 8th, 2009
The Ashton VSG is without a doubt one of the finest non-Cuban Cigars. Today we will be reviewing the Enchantment, the smallest of all Ashton VSG’s. This short perfecto is measuring 4.4 inches, with a ring gauge of 60 around the foot of the cigar, the Enchantment is well known as a short and punchy cigar, a true powerhouse. It is made with premium Dominican tobacco, aged 4 to 5 years. The wrapper, like all wrappers used in the VSG series is grown in Ecuador.
The Enchantment has a dark brown, oily maduro wrapper. Rich aromas are present on the foot and the cigar is very tightly rolled. The draw before lighting the cigar is good and the wrapper leaves a sweet, chocolaty taste on your lips.
Lighting this cigar is a challenge. If it is not lit evenly it can burn uneven. Unfortunately, we experienced the very same problem. This, however, did not effect the draw at all. From the very first draw, the cigar delivers rich, flavourful smoke. Surprisingly, it is medium bodied on the first third, with strong pepper and nutty flavours.
As the ring gauge gets thinner, into the second third, the cigar develops into full bodied. It now burns evenly and the draw is flawless. Leather and cedar now accompany the nutty and the strong pepper flavour. The ash is thick and stays on the cigar until the last third.
Smoking towards the end, the taste of leather is getting stronger with pepper flavour still dominating. Even at its last inch there is no sign of cracks in the wrapper. The ash stays on the cigar until you have to eventually flick it. The Enchantment makes you want to smoke every single bit of it, until you burn your lips! And it does get quite hot…
Overall, the Enchantment is a great cigar. Ideal when you are in a rush, the Enchantment delivers full body, strong flavours and flawless draw. If you would prefer something bigger, you can always try the Sorcerer (7 x 49) or even the giant Spellbound (7 1/2 x 54).
