Ramon Allones Specially Selected
Sunday, May 3rd, 2009Â

The Specially Selected is the only Robusto vitola on regular production from Ramon Allones. A favourite every day cigar for many aficionados, the specially selected is famous for being a consistent cigar offering great value. It has been in regular production since the early 80’s and comes in dress boxes and cabinets of 25, as well as in cabinets of 50.
The Specially Selected we will be reviewing today has a beautiful brown colorado wrapper. The wrapper has some smooth veins and is very oily. Strong leather aromas are present, as well as chocolate, which is more present on the foot of the cigar. The square shape of the girth shows us it has come out of a dress box rather than a cabinet. It is very well constructed, spongy with a few soft spots near the foot of the cigar.

The cigar lights up easily and the draw is good, leaning towards the firm side. The burn is slightly uneven on the first third, but quickly evens up as you smoke towards the second third. It is no different to the typical Ramon Allones flavors. Strong leathery taste. along with earthy, spicy and meaty tones. On the downside, there is a slight acidic taste, that stays consistent until the end of the cigar. Smoking towards the second half, the earthy flavours get stronger, while strong spice is added in the leather and meat.

The cigar draws well and has a thick, creamy texture. The wrapper again burns sligtly unever, but it corrects itself after smoking into the second half. As you reach the third half the cigar reveals it full body, with strong flavours of earth and leather. It is a cigar that you won’t smoke right to the butt, as it can get quite hot and harsh.

Overall, the Ramon Allones Specially Selected is a good and honest cigar, that offers great value. It is one of the cheapest Cuban Robustos out there, retailing as low as €130 for a box of 25.  It would definately benefit with some aging, as it has a slightly unpleasant acidic taste. If you like Full bodied cigars with strong flavours, the Specially Selected will certainly please you, without knocking your socks off.

Nice review Yiorgas thanks… good cigar, but for pretty much the same money I prefer the Partagas Serie D #4
Hmmm… I think you’ve been a bit harsh on this one Yiorgos. I have a few boxes of these and I’ve never found them to burn too hot; I’ll give you a sample next time I see you!
Also, I think the Cab of 25’s have been discontinued for a while, I remember only being able to get them in either Dress Box’s of 25 or Cab’s of 50 from at least ‘06 onwards.
That looks like excellent value. I presume at that price, you are talking about shopping online. I would not imagine you could walk into a shop in Dublin and get a box of 25 for that price. Nice review.
