Romeo y Julieta Duke - Limited Edition 2009

The Romeo y Julieta Duke was the most awaited edicion limitada of 2009. With the other two vitolas of the series being slightly too small for limitadas, it has attracted the most interest. The Duke is the 7th vitola from the company to be featured in the limited edition series. It is a Robusto Extra, measuring a generous 140 x 54 ring gauge, slightly shorter that a Sublime.

Appearance 13/15

The Duke has a light brown wrapper with some mild green hue in places. It is slightly more veiny than you would expect from a Limited Edition cigar. The wrapper is smooth to touch and very oily and aromas of nuts and wood are present. It is very well constructed, tightly packed, without any soft or hard spots.

Flavor & Body 22/25

The cigar kicks off with a medium body and strong, complex flavors. Strong taste of white pepper makes it spicy, with charcoal and roasted nuts being present, creating a well balanced outcome. The flavors stay consistent all the way through the first third. However, while well into the second third, the cigar changes dramatically; It becomes less spicy, with a full body and flavors of cedar and leather taking the stage. It keeps this character until almost the end, but it gets slightly hot and harsh in the last inch.

Smoke & Burn 24/25

The Duke burns nicely and evenly from start to finish, not requiring any touch ups. The draw is also consistent all the way through, slightly on the tight side, and the cigar delivers plenty of thick smoke that is creamy and full of texture.

Overall Impression 32/35

Overall, the Duke is a very good cigar, with great complexity. Its large girth makes it slightly uncomfortable and tiring to smoke, but takes very little away from the overall pleasure. Definitely a cigar with a lot of potential that although young, it still smokes very well. A slight taste of ammonia appears at the end, just before it is time to put it to rest. It surely is my favorite limitada in 2009, and I am certain that it would score even higher with some age.
