cigars_ireland_lonsdales_el_rey_del_mundo_1Day 6 of our Lonsdale reviews and I have been quite pleased with the cigars I have smoked so far. There is quite a few of the cigars left that I haven’t smoked before and that are completely unknown to me, so I really don’t know what to expect. One of these cigars is the El Rey del Mundo Lonsdale. This cigar is a Cervante, measuring 6.5 inches in length by 42 ring gauge and it was discontinued 8 years ago, in 2002. It is one of the less popular cigars of this size and brand, and the one I will be smoking today is from 1999. Would 11 years of age give this cigar an advantage against the rest of the pack? I sure hope so, although the bar has been raised to high already… I will be pairing this cigar with sparkling water, since tap and still water are under extinction in Ireland these days!

The El Rey del Mundo Lonsdale is one of the aged cigars and it shows its age. The wrapper is rough and grainy, with plenty of veins and wrinkles, and a light brown colour. It is well packed and boxed press, with a well applied triple cap. There was hardly any scent on the cigar and the prelight draw is good.

Flavour & Body 20 / 25

The cigar lights up in a cloud of smoke and flavours of nuts and earth. Very mild at start, with a short finish, the first third presents sweet and salty flavours of wood and earth, with some woody tones. While the cigar is still mild on the second third, the flavours get a little stronger. The earth and nuts dominate, followed by wood and toasty tobacco. It is a sweet bunch of flavours and the fact that the cigar draws ample smoke, make it very pleasant. Very little changes on the last third of the cigar. The body is now mild to medium and the earthy and woody flavours have taken over. The sweet finish of the Lonsdale has given way to a bitter and smoky one, that is longer. The cigar smokes similarly until the very end, without getting too hot or harsh.

Draw & Burn 22 / 25

The cigar draws and burns really well all the way through. It seems though that it burns too quickly! The draw is good, and in conjunction with the good combustion, the cigar delivers clouds of smoke! The smoke texture is thin but creamy. The ash is dark grey with a yellow hue and a flaky texture, falling off every half inch.

Overall 30 / 35

The El Rey del Mundo Lonsdale is a mild cigar, a good choice for a beginner smoker. With no real depth or complexity, it is just a pleasant cigar. It’s flavours are no different to the El Rey del Mundo brand, but its body is milder than one would expect. It’s good draw and combustion saved this cigar, as without it it would have been empty. With more than 10 years of age on its back, this cigar seems that it has reached its potential, so if you have any, smoke them now, before they lose any more flavours.
